überlang ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy covers our apps — the überlang browser extension and the AutoScreenCaption Mac app — and related services, and explains how we handle your information.
AutoScreenCaption (Mac app)
AutoScreenCaption does all of its content processing on your device. To add pinyin and translations over on-screen Chinese it reads the screen locally (with the Screen Recording permission you grant), recognizes text with Apple’s Vision framework, looks words up in a dictionary bundled inside the app, and translates with Apple’s on-device Translation framework. Screenshots are processed only in memory and are never saved or transmitted.
The app is free to use every day up to a usage limit. If you choose to sign in with überlang to unlock unlimited use with a Pro subscription, the app authenticates you with Google and checks your subscription status — the same account and billing described in the rest of this policy. Sign-in is optional; without it, no account data is involved.
Information We Collect
Account Information
When you sign in with Google, we collect:
- Your Google account ID (for authentication)
- Your email address (for account management and support)
Usage Data
We collect anonymous usage statistics to improve our service:
- Daily lookup counts (to enforce free tier limits)
- Saved word counts
Saved Words (Pro Users)
If you are a Pro subscriber and use cloud sync, your saved vocabulary words are stored securely in our database to enable cross-device synchronization.
Local Storage
The extension stores data locally on your device including:
- Your saved vocabulary words
- Lookup history
- Extension settings and preferences
How We Use Your Information
- To provide and maintain our service

- To process subscription payments (via Stripe)
- To sync your saved words across devices (Pro feature)

Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services:
- Google OAuth - For secure authentication
- Stripe - For payment processing. We do not store your payment card details.
- Amazon Web Services (AWS) - For secure data storage and API hosting
